It’s “Justin Timber Week” on Jimmy Fallon!
He’s on the show each night as part of the promotion for his new album The 20/20 Experience coming out on Tuesday.
Justin and Jimmy reunited (and it feels so good) and remixed JT’s older hit “Sexy Back” with a ragtime feel.
They call themselves “The Ragtime Gals.” Once you watch the video, all of this will make sense!
The last time he hit the studio, he brought sexy back. Last week, he
teased fans across twitter with a tweet which read “Thursday, January
10th, 2013 at 9:01 am PST...”
Fans were hoping to hear some news or announcement of new music and
that’s exactly what they got. However, he kept them waiting a few more
days to offer more specifics. Initially, he released a minute long
video called “I’m ready”, where a camera follows the singer as he walks
through a recording studio, while his own voiceover discusses why it's
been so long (six and a half years since "FutureSex/LoveSounds") between
albums.
In the video, Timberlake says, "Someone asked me the other day, 'So are you just done with music?'" Fortunately, the answer is no, as the video ends with the "SexyBack" singer stepping into the recording studio. "I don't want to put anything out that I don't love," Timberlake says. "You just don't get that every day. You have to wait for it."
And it has been a long wait of close to 7 years. Today morning, Timberlake fans were welcomed with the release of a brand new track ‘Suit and Tie’ featuring Jay Z, produced by Timbaland. This song is supposed to feature in the singer’s third studio album ‘The 20/20 Experience’ slated to officially release later this year. In a letter posted on his website, Timberlake mentions that the inspiration for the song ‘came out of the blue’.
So was the wait well worth it?
The song starts with a slow groove before dipping into a distinctive, horn-padded Timbaland beat that'll set necks moving and bodies grooving. It’s almost a false intro, leaving you thinking that you are in for a down-tempo, droney track. However, it’s anything but that! Justin Timberlake’s unmistakable falsetto kicks in soon after, as he still continues to sing about sex and dancing. Jay-Z drops his rap part in the bridge, boasting and bragging about hip designer Alexander Wang, truffle season, and wearing tuxedoes for no reason. In fact, there is also a part in the song where talks a bit about Beyonce’s parents (“they ain’t lose a daughter, they got a son”).
“Suit & Tie” is a bubbly, retro groove, mixing dreamy ethereality with Timbaland‘s magic, as well as Justin Timberlake’s falsettos. I can’t say it’s what I was expecting, although it’s been so long that I’m not really sure what I was expecting, but it certainly doesn’t scream “immediate game-changer” the way “Sexy Back” did. Probably because Timberlake’s been away from music for so long that it’ll take time even for his fans to reacquaint themselves to his voice again. Though, for pop music, JT really is the real deal and ‘Suit & Tie’ is one of those songs which will need multiple listens before we can really let it grow on us.
