Pretty much the hottest directorial job
in Hollywood right now is that for "Justice League," the Warner Bros.
movie that will team superheroes Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The
Flash and more. The film is still likely three years away, but the
success of "The Avengers" and the end of Christopher Nolan's Batman saga
has caused Warners to actively move forward on the project,
commissioning a script from "Gangster Squad" writer Will Beall last
year. And earlier this week, news leaked out of the director that was
their first choice for the project: Ben Affleck.

Gotta love them trade wars. Make sure
you have an umbrella because there's a lot of pissing (on each other)
going on. This afternoon Variety reported that Warner Bros. is hoping to
have Ben Affleck direct "Justice League", the D.C. Universe's
super-hero all-star team and the equivalent of Marvel's massively
succesful "The Avengers."

The adaptation of Stephen King's "The
Stand" (which just got a new writer) and the remake of Guillaume Canet's
"Tell No One" are just a couple of the projects Ben Affleck has brewing
as possibilities to direct after his duties on "Argo" are all locked
up. And there's also "Nathan Decker," a political comedy that he would
star in if he wanted to take a breather from being behind the camera, as
well as a Whitey Bulger biopic he would write with Matt Damon and take a
role in. But it looks like Warner Bros. not only want to keep him in
house, they want to give him the keys to the most important movie in
their upcoming slate.

"Like what Chris Nolan is doing and what
I’m doing with Superman, what they’ll do with Justice League will be
its own thing with its own Batman and own Superman. We’ll be over here
with our movie and they’ll kinda get to do it twice which is kinda
cool," Zack Snyder said in March 2011 about the status of "Man Of Steel"
and whether or not it would tie into a proposed "Justice League" movie.
But a few things happened since then. Firstly, Warner Bros. would
release "Green Lantern" a few months later and it would flop horribly,
killing any chances of launching a new franchise. And this year,
Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" puts an end to the latest
version of Batman on the big screen, putting the character away for a
few years until the inevitable reboot. What's a studio to do?

While there's a constant back-and-forth
in the comics world, Marvel seem to pretty firmly be beating out
arch-rivals DC Comics in the movie world. For much of the history of the
superhero movie, it was DC (who've long been part of Warner Bros) who
dominated, thanks to the success of "Superman" and "Batman," while
Marvel were either not adapted at all, or done so poorly. But since
1998's "Blade," Marvel have been on the resurgence, eventually producing
their own films, culminating in this year's "The Avengers," the most
successful superhero film in history, while DC have had success with the
Batman movies, but not much else; "Superman Returns" disappointed,
while things like "Green Lantern" and "Jonah Hex" tanked outright.

So just how valuable is the Batman brand
to Warner Bros.? As early as last spring, with the studio seeing the
the current iteration of the series coming to an end with "The Dark
Knight Rises," they were already beginning to talk reboot. “We have the
third Batman, but then we’ll have to reinvent Batman,” Warner Bros.
chief Jeff Robinov said in March 2011. Asked if he meant a reboot, he
said: “I do. Chris Nolan and [producing partner and wife] Emma Thomas
will be producing it, so it will be a conversation with them about what
the next phase is.” But, not so fast on Nolan's participation...

As we were just mentioning this
afternoon, "Green Lantern" is a huge blemish and disappointment
for Warner Bros. Launched just as WB were putting the finishing touches
on their super lucrative "Harry Potter" series ($7.7 billion worldwide),
the studio was hoping "Green Lantern" would be the beginning of a
chapter in leveraging DC Comics super hero properties in the manner
their competition (Marvel Studios) had already been successfullly doing
and beyond the likes of flagship characters like Batman and Superman. In
fact, "Green Lantern" was very much akin to "Iron Man." A B-level
character far from a household name, Marvel did the unthinkable, remade
the character into their A-list star property. Utilizing a similar,
humor-filled approach not so dark and brooding as Christopher Nolan's
"The Dark Knight Rises," "Green Lantern" seemed to take some of its
basic cues from "Iron Man," only missing all marks by miles.

If J.J Abrams, Christopher Nolan, Damon
Lindelof and Ridley Scott are viewed as being on the secretive side
about revealing plot details and information regarding their unreleased,
often still-in-development movies, one then must consider comic book
writer Mark Millar to be on the exact opposite end of the spectrum.
While not exactly in the movie business like the four aforementioned
artists, several of Millar's comics (such as "Supercrooks" and
"Nemesis") are in development at various studios and production
companies. Seemingly very enthusiastic to be a part of the Hollywood
process, Millar is very amenable to telling you pretty much whatever you
want to know about any of his projects in development, going as far as
to make wild casting announcements (like when we said Johnny Depp and
Brad Pitt were being approached for "Nemesis") and generally claiming
unrealistic start dates to any project under the sun (all of them).

With "Green Lantern" tanking and
disappointing last summer, "The Dark Knight Rises" putting Batman to bed
(for now), and the verdict still out on "Man Of Steel" next year,
Warner Bros. is looking pretty short on comic book heroes to exploit.
But they've got an ace up their sleeve in "Justice League." A movie
they've been trying to get off the ground for years (more on that in a
moment), the studio is undoubtedly looking at Marvel's $1.3 billion
worldwide haul for "The Avengers" and drooling. You call that a team up
movie? How about one with Superman and Batman in the same damn movie? So
no surprise they are giving it another go.

Just Like Audiences Worldwide, WB
Reportedly Not Happy With Martin Campbell's DirectionThere is nothing
about a prospective "Green Lantern 2" that doesn't reek of flop sweat.
DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. are scuffling in their race against
Marvel/themselves to develop a new chain of franchises based on comic
book characters, and the performance of "GL" this summer has certainly
hurt momentum. With "The Dark Knight Rises" pegged for next summer and
"The Man Of Steel" after that, they're going to want to diversify, lest
the studio be forced to greenlight a bunch of actual real movies with
interesting original characters not made to sell Happy Meals. Ye gods.

Perspective is necessary. $53 million is
a whole lotta money. $53 million could buy several houses, it could
feed many people, it could save lives. $53 million is also a pretty good
opening for a somewhat higher-budgeted film, provided advertising isn’t
through the roof and there aren’t a massive amount of back-end
benefactors involved. But for “Green Lantern,” which cost upwards of
$200 million before a massive ad campaign even by superhero standards,
this is not a strong opening.

Filmmaker Says Batman & Superman
WILL Appear In New 'JLA' FilmNewly installed as the head of Warner
Bros., Jeff Robinov has wasted no time in getting the studio's
priorities straight for the next few years and they plan on diving head
first into the comic properties they have, and no wonder. With
Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" marking the end of a chapter
(though he will produce the eventual reboot), WB already has "Green
Lantern" hitting this summer, with "The Flash" and "Wonder Woman" films
in development. But perhaps the biggest news to emerge in the last few
days is that a "Justice League" movie is in the works to hit screens in
2013 -- just a year after Zack Snyder and Nolan bow their Superman and
Batman films. It's an ambitious move with a lot of questions still to be
answered. But Snyder has cleared up the biggest query around the film
so far: it will be separate from the worlds he and Nolan will have
created.
